If Anybody Asks in Charleston

On my first morning in Charleston, I picked out a tune on the guitar and the melody for a new song came to me pretty quickly. I made a short video from some of the footage I shot while I was riding through South Carolina and headed downtown.

Charleston may just be the most beautiful city I’ve ever been to. The old buildings, the old streets, and the glorious trees make it an idyllic place to be. However, in 97° weather, I cut my day short, but not before the city inspired a line for the chorus of my new song.

My hosts also discussed the changes to Charleston they’ve seen over the years. From the growth in population and increase in traffic to the removal of confederate statues and renaming certain places, I think the whole world has seen quite a bit of change in the last few years for a number of reasons. However, as uncomfortable as it may be, change is the only constant life has to offer us.

The Times they are a changing, and there’s a changing of the tide

And changes are outrageous for a few

For all that we’ve attempted, and all that we have tried

We still rely on what is tried and true

C. G

What we used to count on is now of no account

What we believed is now beyond belief

What we thought was foregone has now been denounced

D

And changes just estrange us from relief

G Am D

Life today just ain’t the way it used to be

But I ain’t driven to be livin in the past

Can’t maneuver into the future repeating history

Yesterday saw a better way or so they always say

Nostalgia seems to add a Rosy view

We have a way of being led astray and getting swept away

Romanticizing what we think is true

C. G

We sacrifice the moment for a distant memory

And won’t live in the magic of the now

We maximize incumbent ideas to remedy

D

The way we want to live but don’t know how

G Am D

Life today just ain’t the way it used to be

But I ain’t driven to be livin in the past

Can’t maneuver into the future repeating history

If anybody asks

Now we’re canceling our culture and culturing the con

And our grudges will not budge us from delusion

From every perspective we decide which side we’re on

But our crutches do not rush us to solutions

C. G

Yesterday is just as real as Tomorrow never was

Today is the only day we get to live

We should give way to our idealistic tendencies Because

D

The best way to move forward is forgive

Life today just ain’t the way it used to be

But I ain’t driven to be livin in the past

Can’t maneuver into the future repeating history
