“Raspberry Beret” was the first Prince song that I learned. I thought it was so fun to be able to cover an artist like Prince on an acoustic guitar. I never imagined that he would become my most covered artist.
The song doesn’t have a lot of depth, but it’s a lot of fun. And ultimately, I see that as the essence of what Prince was about. Although he occasionally touched onn deeper topics, his music was largely about having fun, largely in a sexual manner.
I’ve honestly never met a woman who owns a raspberry beret, but the idea of someone who would make such a fashion statement does resonate with me. I like people who stand apart and do things or wear things that are not so commonplace. Ultimately, I see this song being about the merits of individuality.
Sometimes there’s a woman who walks into your life
who brings you nothin’ but lovin’ and leaves out all the strife.
There’s a magical stigma ’bout the time that you spend
havin’ adventures and paintin’ the town red.
She takes you outta your comfort zone and into a new one
and even while you’re doin’ it, you don’t know what you’re doin’.
If you don’t know what i’m talking about
or don’t know where they’re at,
the girls that make memories are the ones that wear hats.
Here’s my version of the song:
